Hugh Smyth

Hugh Smyth has exited in 58th, and he recounted an ugly bust-out hand at the media table.

Smyth jammed pocket jacks from early position for 128,000 at 6,000/12,000, around 11 big blinds, and the cutoff rejammed for 128,000. The button then moved all in for 200,000, forcing out folds from the rest of the table.

Both of Smyth’s opponents had ace-king, and when cards were turned over another player stated he had folded an ace. With so many of his opponents’ outs gone, Smyth was dreaming of a triple up, but a rivered ace sent him to the exit as his opponents chopped up his stack.

Smyth jumped straight into the Dublin 400 as he continues his quest for the Player of the Year title.

Paul Leckey opened to 39,000 from middle position and Dave Smith defended his big blind.

On the Q♠8♥5♠ flop Smith led out with a bet of 40,000, which Leckey quickly called.

The 2♥ rolled off on the turn, and Smith check-folded versus a bet of 75,000 from Leckey, after quite a bit of thought. Smith declared it was either “all-in or fold”, while Leckey said “I had the best hand” as he raked in the pot.

Sure enough, the 5♣ rolled off on the turn to give McDonnell the straight and leaving Landy drawing dead. The 6♥ river completed the board.

Eoin O’Shea opened to 24,000 from the cutoff, and was faced with a three-bet jam by chip leader Jorrit Baars in the big blind, applying maximum bubble pressure. O’Shea called off for the rest of his stack, totalling 250,000. Baars called.

On the bubble, around 140,000 was in the middle in a hand between Maxim Fana and Jamie Cunningham, on a completed board of 8♠10♦8♥9♠Q♦.

Fana slid out a bet of 135,000 and got a call from Cunningham, who got the bad news when Fana showed 8♣8♦ for quad eights.
